A Novice's Guide to Foreign Idioms

If you think learning foreign idioms is easy, just try combing the giraffe

Some years back I was invited to speak at a black-tie event for the French-American Chamber of Commerce at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Because the audience would be primarily French nationals, I was advised to avoid using American idioms in my address. This is a fine kettle of fish, I thought as I sat down to purge my vocabulary of American idioms. What I was left with at the end of the day was “Good evening,” “Thank you”.

I’d have sold the farm back then for a peek into Jag Bhalla’s 2009 book, I’m Not Hanging Noodles on Your Ears, and Other Intriguing Idioms From Around the World. Had I done so, I could have substituted French idioms for the English ones that make up way too much of my working vocabulary.

Imagine the audience’s delight had I told them how I felt my butt was fringed with noodles to be there. These noodles, by the way, would be different from those hanging on my ears—a Russian expression meaning, “I’m not pulling your leg.” I’m not pulling your leg.

The French nationals gathered at the Plaza clearly had their butter, money for the butter and the woman who made it. But, some of them also had a glass up their noses. No doubt I would have had their posteriors banging on the ground if only I’d read Bhalla’s guidebook.

I’m Not Hanging Noodles on Your Ears does more than catalog humorous world idioms. It presents an often-confounding glimpse at the inner soul of foreign cultures. “Language most shows a man,” the British playwright Ben Jonson once wrote. “Speak that I might see thee.” But what do I see when I hear that a Colombian who is hopelessly in love has been swallowed like a postman’s sock, or that drowning the fish in France is to lose by deliberate confusion? I have no idea how to use the phrase, but I can’t wait to try it, even if I drown the fish in the attempt.

In fact, there are dozens of foreign idioms we could put to good use in these parts. When talking about misers, we typically resort to cheapskate. But I like it that in Syria, a penny pincher is better known as an ant milker. (Not to be confused with a German mouse milker, who in the United States would be called a micromanager.)

That nervous boy at the door to pick up your daughter would be like a dog in a canoe in Puerto Rico. And if he had to be shown the door at the end of the evening he could leave mainland Spanish style and go out by the neck of the shirt.

As for my French friends, they’re likely to invite me back to speak in a week with four Thursdays. Then I will once again bite the moon on behalf of international bonhomie. Am I pounding sand down a rathole? “Au contraire,” the French might say. I am combing the giraffe.

Menilik Keunikan Batik Kas Cirebon

Kemajemukan budaya di Indonesia membuat kita bangga menjadi orang Indonesia. Nah, sekarang tugas kita adalah menjaga agar akar budaya tersebut tidak sirna dimakan jaman. Salah satu karya budaya bumi pertiwi yang harus dilestarikan adalah batik. Beragam jenis dan motif batik hadir di Indonesia sesuai dengan karakter dan daerah masing-masing. Salah satu yang unik adalah batik khas Cirebon.

Batik Cirebon ini memiliki ciri unik dengan motif awan-awan yang menarik. Oleh karena itu, motif batik khas Cirebon ini disebut dengan motif Mega Mendung. Motif ini juga identik dan bahkan telah menjadi ikon batik pesisiran Cirebon. Motif Mega Mendung tadi juga menjadi ciri khas batik Cirebon karena tidak dapat ditemui di pesisir penghasil batik lain di utara Jawa.

Selain unik dan menarik, motif batik Mega Mendung khas Cirebon ini juga memiliki sejarah yang sangat kuat. Motif awan dan warna-warna tegas seperti biru dan merah pun memiliki filosofi tersendiri bagi masyarakat Cirebon.

Menurut sejarah, batik Cirebon merupakan hasil asimilasi dan akulturasi beragam budaya yang ada ketika Pelabuhan Muara Jati di Cirebon menjadi tempat persinggahan para pedagang. Pedagang yang singgah berasal dari Tiongkok, Arab, Persia, dan India.

Berawal dari pernikahan Putri Ong Tien wanita berketurunan Tiongkok dengan Sunan Gunung Djati yang disinyalir menjadi gerbang bergabungnya dua kebudayaan tersebut. ketika itu keraton menjadi pusat kosmik sehingga ide atau gagasan serta pernak-pernik budaya Tiongkok masuk dan berasimilasi dengan budaya Cirebon. Salah satu yang dihasilkan adalah batik Cirebon dengan motif awan-awan yang lekat dengan mitologi Tiongkok.

Motif Mega Mendung sendiri yang berupa awan-awan dianggap sebagai lambang kesuburan. Awan pembawa hujan membawa kesuburan dan kehidupan bagi masyarakat. Warna-warna yang ada seperti biru yang melambangkan kehidupan yang cerah juga mendominasi batik ini. Namun seiring dengan waktu, batik Cirebon ini juga memiliki warna yang beragam seperti hijau, merah atau bahkan putih.

Batik Cirebon memang memiliki motif yang khas serta unik. Karya indah khas Cirebon ini juga tidak hanya sebagai karya budaya yang dapat dinikmati keindahannya. Lebih dari itu, keindahan dan keanggunan batik ini juga mengandung nilai dan arti budaya yang filosofis yang menjadi kekayaan nusantara.

Still continue about theater

Yeah... this story still continue all about theater. Now in the seventh grade and itwas for the second time still there the task of theater. The dividing of group theater, the assistance of lab still divided into two shift for every class. The difference with last grade that for every shift didn’t divide again. So there was about twenty-two student for every shift. In every shift there division for every part like part of crews, actors, and acrtis. I joined into crew of property, there were about four person which including me. But every part from this shift, they hepled each other. They were so compact. I knew that every part for this group has the different think. How the different think became one think , it was so difficult but our team always tried to resolved every that difference until got some conclusion for better. Eemmm... all about it, our team get story of love suicedes at sonazaki. Thats tell about true love story from one of county, Jepang. In this story there four scene like in bar, backyard for twice action and the shop. It is be challenge for the team of property to think the setting for four place, how to set property when it replace from one scene to another scene without enough time for replace it, yeah it just ten seconds. Yeah thats the challenge. Finding tool property and making it. We are going to performance in the next week. I wish our performance will be ok.
